Styles question

Hi,

Can I format a paragraph with more than one paragraph style without using
the Styles Separator?

For example:

Section 1. Defintions. This paragraph will define terms to be used etc etc
etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc
etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.

I want the "Section 1. Definitions." to be in a Heading style so it appears
in the TOC. I want the body of the paragraph to be in body text, so that it
doesn't come into the TOC.

Generally the way I've done this in the past is to put a Styles Separator
between the word "Definitions." and "This paragraph ..."

But today we received a document from an outside source where there were no
Styles Separators, yet each paragraph had a Heading style followed by a Body
Text style, all within the same paragraph.

How would they have done this?

The only other way I know of to do this is with a hidden paragraph mark (see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/RunInSidehead.htm), but if you just
"paint" a style onto text (in which case it's applied as a "linked"
character style), you may not see an explicit style separator.
