Styles

Hello. I am trying to use Word's "styles" feature, but I
always seem to have trouble with it. I think I
understand the basics, but inevitably it seems that I end
up with two different pieces of text to which the same
style has been applied, but they have different
formatting! I just set up a style called Subheading 2
and applied it to several pieces of text. Now, some of
them have a .5 inch indent and others have a .75 inch
indent - yet they all say that they are the same style!
Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks.

For information on using Styles see <URL:
http://addbalance.com/usersguide/styles.htm.> If your styles incorporate
automatic numbering or bullets, though, you also need to study Word
numbering, which isn't easy, but can be done. Indents and other features of
automatically numbered styles are not controlled in the style but in the
numbering list template.

In Word 97, a paragraph may be of a certain style, and have additional
formatting changes piled on top of the style. For example, if the style
Subheading 2 says ".5 inch indent" a paragraph might have formatting saying
"Subheading 2 plus .75 inch indent." I call this "pile-on formatting." In
the style pull-down list (left of the font name pull-down), both say
"Subheading 2." It isn't obvious which paragraphs are basic style
paragraphs and which are pile-on paragraphs.

Here's a suggestion on what to do. First decide which indent you want for
the style. Then select a paragraph that has the wrong indent. The style
pull-down list already says Subheading 2, but use the style pull-down list
to re-select Subheading 2 anyhow.

If this is a pile-on paragraph, you'll get a dialog box giving you this
choice:
Do you want to:
o Update the style ...
o Reapply the formatting of the style to the selection
You should choose "Reapply...". To fix the other "wrong indent" paragraphs,
either repeat this process or use the "format painter" (the yellow brush
button).

On the other hand, you might not get the dialog box. This means that the
wrong indent is in the style. In this case, select a paragraph that has the
right indent and use the style pull-down list to select Subheading 2 (as
before). Now you should get the dialog box mentioned earlier. In this case,
choose "Update the style..."

Hi,

you can try a couple of things:

In Tools>Templates and Addins dialog, make sure that
Automatically Update Styles is OFF. Otherwise inadvertent
changes may be changing your definition of the style.

Check that the style is not based on another style that
has a different indent. Make sure the setting is None or
you get all kinds of weird things happening.

set the paragraphs back to Normal and then reapply the
Style.

Do you get a dialog box asking you whether to reapply the
style or automatically update the style? Make sure you
click re-apply the style.

Good luck!

You can remove direct formatting, that is, formatting that is not in the
applied paragraph style, for selected paragraphs in the following way:

1. Press CTRL+SPACEBAR to remove character formatting (font, font size,
color, and so on).

2. Press CTRL+Q to remove paragraph formatting (indentation, space
before/after, line spacing, alignment, and so on).
