styles

I have a spreadsheet that has "evolved" over several years.
I have a bunch of styles that appear to be named after excel files that
were copied into this main spreadsheet.

How can I tell which are not being used and is it safe to remove these?
I notice everything that uses these styles gets messed up visually if I
delete a style that is currently being used, is there a method of
converting them to be one of the standard styles, and then I can just
adjust the formtting?

I'm not sure of how styles differ from formats, are styles, like pre-
defined formats or something? Just last week I had an error about "too
many formats" so I deleted a bunch and then reformatted what seems like
hundreds of cells. An example is that dates were showing up several
different formats, when in actual fact they could all be the same
format.

Also, why are there styles like Comma and then also Comma [0]

Any help or a pointer to a site that can assist me on this?

Try checking out this previous post by MVP Leo Heuser,
where he provides a Sub DeleteUnusedStyles()

Thanks for the link.
Between this and the DeleteUnusedCustomNumberFormats, by the same
author, I managed to get the entire workbook cleaned up nicely.
