Sub-bullet character in numbering style

Outlook 2000
I created a simple numbering style w/ bullets (not numbers). The 1st
level heading uses a solid black dot. The 2nd level uses a hollow
circle. How do I change the bullet type use for each level?

NAME = Normal + Font: Arial, Indent: Left 0.25" Hanging 0.25",
Bulleted, Tabs: 0.5" , Automatically update

Also when modifying the style, the Bullets and Numbering window
(gallery) shows 3 identical selections displaying my style name as the
first item in list. Why?

You should read this:

http://shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html

PLUS the other articles in that section (Numbering, Bullets, Headings,
Outlines).

I think the multiple instances in the Gallery arise because each time you
use any method OTHER than applying a style to create a list component, Word
creates a new definition of the list template. In other words, don't use the
Gallery. Just apply styles that are defined with a bullet.

Regarding the gallery, that might be so. But I still like to have the
original/default gallery options as they are convenient for quick and
dirty lists. I don't want to create a style for every single list I
might use. Any way to get back the default ones?

Click each pane in the gallery in turn and click Reset.

Well that was rather obvious. Sorry, I should have figured that one
out on my own.
Was Bear NoSpam's explanation of why it happens accurate?
Thanks

Any ideas on my original question (selecting bullet styles)?

I don't know how you'd do in in Outlook 2000, or even in Word 2000 (and I
just this morning gave away my Word 2000 manuals), but in Word 2003 you
would go to Format | Style, select the top-level bullet style, and click
Modify, then Format: Numbering.

In the Numbering dialog, make sure that the Outline Numbered tab is selected
(if it's not, then you're going to need to start more from scratch); without
changing the selected pane, click Customize. If you have to change tabs,
select the Outline Numbered pane that is closest to the end result desired
(which will probably be the one with bullets) and click Customize.

In the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog, select the desired bullet for
your Level 1 style and make sure that the Level is linked to the style
(click More to expose that part of the dialog). Then select Level 2 and
choose the desired bullet for that style and link it to the style. And so on
for any further levels. Then OK several times to exit all the dialogs.

Note that, while the font and other style characteristics can be set in the
Font and Paragraph dialogs, the left and hanging indent must be set in the
Numbering dialog, so check on those when you're choosing the appropriate
bullet for each level.

Once you've applied a bulleted style from this series to a given paragraph,
you can use Alt+Shift+Left/Right Arrow to promote/demote levels; if you
check the box for "Tabs and backspace set left indent" on the Edit tab of
Tools | Options, you can also use Tab and Shift+Tab (and possibly even
Backspace) for this.
