Sub-menu in doc map not showing with right-click

Melissa

[I posted the same question in "Gen Question" but hv not received any
responses...]

When I right-click within document map, I don't get the sub-menu. but if I
left-click a heading then hit shift+F10, the menu appears.

I've re-created a blank document and inserted some headings and text but the
sub-menu still won't appear using the mouse.

I thought it may be a mouse problem but I can right-click fine in other
applications.

This sounds like a settings corruption issue. When I right-click in document
map -- the map side or the document side -- I get the expected/appropriate
context menus.

For starters, I'd try opening Word in safe mode (not sure which version
you're using, but hold down the Ctrl key when starting Word (keep Ctrl
pressed until Word appears on the task bar), and you should be prompted
whether to open Word in Safe mode. Say Yes to safe mode.

Now, see if context menus work correctly. If they do, take a look here:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

and follow the steps to see if the problem is with Normal.dot or a registry
issue.

Hi Herb,
thanks for the tips! Here are the results of my "testing":

1. Opening Word in safe mode
Yup! Context menus appear when I right-click in doc map.

2. Check registry
I follwed the instructions to find and delete the "Data" file and re-started
Word. The context menus appear for a brand-new Word document. But when I
tested on an existing document, it doesn't work.

3. Check Normal.dot
Need more help here.
After renaming the old Normal.dot to Normal.old, how do I "create" a new
Normal.dot?

The next time you make any kind of change that would be stored in Normal.dot
(such as changing a default font, modifying a style, customizing the
keyboard/menu/toolbars), Word automatically creates a new Normal.dot for
you. It's part of its genetic encoding.

I'm guessing that whatever problem you have has "contaminated" existing
files. Since this is a menu issue. I'd try the following to see if it fixes
the problem in an existing file. Open a file and confirm that the Document
Map context menus aren't working correctly. Now, right-click any toolbar and
choose Customize. Click the Toolbars tab. Under Toolbars, find Shortcut
Menus. Click it, then click Reset; if prompted, confirm. (Shortcut Menus is
the item that explicitly contains all of your right-click context menus.)
Choose Close.

I deleted Normal.dot,, opened an existing Word doc, made some changes to
styles, saved the doc and closed Word. A new Normal.dot was automaticaly
created, as you mentioned.

I then re-opened by Word doc and reset the Shortcut menu as per your
instructions. The Doc Map context maps still aren't working with a mouse
right-click.

Am I correct that the context menus are working okay on new documents, but
not on existing documents? What if you save a new document, close it, and
reopen it? Are context menus still working in that document?

If so, then it would appear that existing documents are based on a corrupted
version of Normal.dot... and that corruption is still embedded in the
documents. What happens if you reattach Normal.dot (which is now the new &
uncorrupted normal.dot)? Open a document in which the context menus aren't
working. Choose Tools - Templates and Add-ins. Click Attach; navigate to
Normal.dot and select it, then click Open, and OK.
