SubForm Can't be Changed

I have a subform child that is NOT linked to the parent,
it has 5 selection fields (Y/N) that when the form is
opened by itself, works great, yet when I use it as a
subform, I can click on the 5, see the selection highlight
around the field, but the value won't update. Any ideas,
PLEASE
