subform control

I'm relatively new to Access and I'm having trouble with controlling records
in a subform.

I would like to navigate through subform records using a button located on
the main form. I have tried using "GoToRecord" in a macro but get the
message that the subform is not open. How can I navigate through the subform
without having to use the navigation bar located in the subform. Thank you
in advance.
