Subform on tab control

I'm a student developing a simple sales quote form for an internship project
using Access 2007. I have a form based on a table with the quote header
info, company name address etc. I have a subform with line item detail i.e.
quoted item, unit price, extension etc. I have created similar form/subform
relationships in the past with success. This is the first time I have used a
tabbed form as there are simply too many fields in the header form to fit on
one page (the company's criteria, not mine).

I cannot add records to the subform!

If I use the subform on its own, it works. If I open the query I can add
records. If I create a new (very crowded) form with the header info and drag
the subform to a single page form, the subform works. The only variable seems
to be the use of tabs. I "get it" re normal form, keys and indexes, one-many
etc. What could be wrong? Any suggestions appreciated! PS - testing my
forms in Access 2003 produced same result.
