Is it possible to display a text box in a form footer
within a subform viewed as a datasheet.

No; but you can use a Continuous Form which *looks* just like a
datasheet. Drag all the textboxes to the top of the form, and arrange
them so they abut side by side. Put caption labels in the Form Header
and your sums or whatever in the Footer.
The user won't be able to resize the columns as they can with a
datasheet, but in general I wouldn't want them to do so anyway,
especially if there are controls in the footer which should line up!
