subreport problem

I have a master report to list information about some 'cases' and I want to
put in a subreport to list potential detail records. I have created an
actual report definition for the details, based on the appropriate table. I
have then inserted this report as a Subreport, using the wizard and defined
the appropriate master/child fields.

My problem is...I can open the detail report by itself and see data...but
when I run the Master report with the detail report defined as a subreport,
all I get is an empty box.

Anyone have any ideas?

First check that the Wizard has set up the correct links by selecting the
Subreport in the Main Report's design view, click on Properties, click on
the Data tab and see if the MasterChild links are the correct ones. I don't
know if later copies of Access have corrected this but in Acc97 and 2000 the
Wizard window isn't quite wide enough to actually read which fields it is
linking and I haven't found a way to widen that darn box yet.

See if there really is some data in the subreport to go with the main
report. ie if your main report based on Customer and subreport based on
Sales to customer both contain customer ID, has that customer actually made
any sales.

I usually don't base my main report on the same query as my subreport -
don't know it it makes a difference though. But if that is what you have
done, it might be worth a try copy/pasting the query and using the copy in
the subreport

Evi...

Thanks for the tips, but the master/child links are correct. I have found
something interesting however. When the report preview displays on the
screen and I click in the empty space where the 'child' records should
appear...the "Filter" function lights up at the top of the screen. Then, if
I click on it, it shows me all of the possible data values that should be
appearing in the details report...but aren't.

So, it would appear to be some sort of a display problem where something is
being masked or is set up to be transparent (or not). Anyway....I'll keep
digging.

I took a shot in the dark and re-created the master report and inserted a
sub-report based on the child records table....everything works fine!!! I'm
not sure what got mucked up in the back-end or whever...but the problem has
gone away

Thanks for the tip. I bet someone else ends up with exactly the same problem
one day soon.
