subsite / subdomain

I want to publish a subsite / subdomain (http://www.subsite.mainsite.com)
but I'm not sure how.
In FrontPage I can change the subsite to a folder but I don't have any links
in my subsite after I publish it nor do I have shared borders. Can I have
only a 1 page subsite? If I don't change the subsite to a folder and
publish it, it isn't accessible on the internet.
I don't have links between the subsite and the main site but I do have links
from one subsite page to another (at least I did when I created the
subsite).
Can anyone help?

A subdomain or subsite can have as many pages and files as desired
(space permitting). Links between subdomain and root web must be
absolute links. Shared borders cannot be shared between subdomain (or
subweb) and the main web.

There are two ways to set up a subdomain:
1) as a folder within the main site - example
http://www.example.com/subdomain and this would be accessed as
http://subdomain.example.com

Here the subdomain would be set up as a subweb (or subsite) in
FrontPage. A subweb is completely independent from other webs
including the root web. That means that it has its own shared
borders, themes, and navigation - nothing in the root web will affect
the subweb, and if used as a subdomain, no files in the root web can
be accessed in the subweb unless they are referred to as absolute
links example
absolute link
Relative links will not work.
You would publish the subweb using http://www.example.com/subdomain as
the destination web. Using http://subdomin.example.com will result in
the error similar to "no extensions found"

2) As a new website. The new website would not be contained in the
main site at all - it would be a new hosting package but accessed as
http://subdomain.example.com
As a completely independent website there is absolutely nothing in
common with the main site. You would publish using
http://subdomain.example.com as the destination.

Method 1 is the most common way of setting up subdomains.

Thanks for the help Ronx however I'm still having problems.

1. When I publish the website I have to 'manually' select the subsite pages
and move them into the subsite folder. If I don't select them 'manually',
FrontPage wants to add them to the main site.

2. After I publish the website, I don't have any navigation links (the "link
bars" that were created by FrontPage) in my subsite.

I created the subsite by opening the main site in FrontPage and selecting
the Web Site tab and clicking on Folders. In Folders I right click in an
empty area and select New > Subsite... This opened a new instance of
FrontPage, I edited how I want the subsite to look and everything looks good
in FrontPage.
When I try to publish the subsite, I have to select all of the subsite files
and folders and drag/drop them into the subsite folder on the server
otherwise it tries to write all of the files to the main site on the server
and overwrite files with the same name like index.htm.
I set up the "Publish Site" as http://www.MainSite.com and I can connect and
publish but I have to do the subsite manually and my linkbars are gone. I
also tried to set up the "Publish Site" as http://www.subsite.MainSite.com
and FrontPage tells me that it's unable to open the site. I also tried
http://www.MainSite.com and the click on the Browse... button and select the
subsite folder that was created on the server (when I created the subsite on
the server) but when I do that, FrontPage responds with "A Web site does not
exist at http://www.MainSite.com/subsite. Would you like FrontPage to
create a Web site at that location?". If I click Yes, FrontPage brings up
the User Name / Password dialog box and won't accept my password.
Can you see what I am doing wrong?
Thank you,

John

The answer is simply
Error - DNS Error or Server Not Found

Open the live (remote) site in FrontPage.
Is the subsite folder a subweb (a folder with a globe on it?) If not
convert it into a subweb as you did in your local web (right click,
convert to web).

When you publish the subsite, use http://www.Mainsite.com/subsitename
as the destination. Or publish the main web site, and in Remote Site
properties -Publishing Tab, include subsites.
Moving the files individually is not the same as publishing. The
navigation will not go with the files unless the site is published.
Also check that your host allows subsites - some do not, others insist
that they create the subsite on the server, and not you.

Ronx,

It was only a folder, not a subweb and converting it to a subweb did the
trick.

Thanks for your time and your help.
