subtotals in excel X not work?

I can't get the subtotal feature to operate in Excel X. I follow the
instructions in the Help file precisely, and the Data > Subtotals
command remains dimmed. Any ideas? Thanks... M

Hi

Are you trying to use the "subtotals" feature on the Data menu or are you
trying to use the Subtotal worksheet function?

Syntax
SUBTOTAL(function_num,ref1,ref2,...)

What was the exact response of Excel to your attempt to use whatever you
tried?

oh.. belay that. It turns out I was trying to use subtotals in a List
under management by the List Manager, and it wouldn't give me what I
wanted. When I disengaged the List Manager, Subtotals worked. --M
