Subweb permissions

I've set usernames and passwords for a bunch of subwebs. The users have
permission to browse only. In most cases, everything works fine. When someone
attempts to access the subweb they are requested to provide a username and
password. Some users, however, find that they are asks for a domain as well.
Why is this, and what would the domain be? The subweb domain name? The main
domain name?

It may be come up because of the Windows version they have or the IE
secuitiy settings. What happens if they leave that extra field blank?
