Success story

I've just read Chris Pratleys latest blog and at his suggestion thought
I'd share a ON success story.

After using ON for 6 months I can confidently say that this is the tool
I've been waiting for even though I didn't know it !

I got suckered into downloading the 60 day trial on the back of the
fact that I extensively used the Notes function in Outlook and saw that
ON was described as Notes on Steroids. This had to be worth
investigating. Outlook Notes are ok but it's not a satisfying
experience to use them and they lack any advanced functionality.

Transferring my Notes to ON took about an hour and it was obvious that
ON was so much more than Outlook Notes. Notes on steroids and then some
!. The ability to organise, move, search, add tasks, flags are all
invaluable once you've got used to it.

Initially I thought the side notes were a gimmick and not useful,
however because I often use ON to quickly dump ideas I now find myself
using the Side notes shortcut (Windows Key-N) all the time just to dump
some information. At the end of the working day I come back to ON and
sort the side notes into proper notes.

My ON is now full of information. I've found all sorts of uses for
it. My daily Journal, blog entries, work notes, case histories, web
links, etc, etc. I can find data quickly either because it's
categorised or via the search. My day-to-day management of projects is
now much better and I feel that I'm on top of the outstanding tasks.
Using something like MS Project is ok for detailed management but ON
allows me to quickly see the issues of the day and who is doing what.

I don't use a tablet PC, just a desktop and so haven't really
explored the handwriting ability. But I don't feel like I'm missing
anything. ON gives me enough already.

There are some niggles, such as being unable to alphabetically sort
page tabs, but one suspects this will be fixed in the next release.
Another concern I have is the proprietary way in which ON stores data.
It is possible to export data but only in a limited way, so support for
XML export would be greatly appreciated.

As a work tool, ON is invaluable. As testament to this, I am probably
the first person in my company to use ON. I often email a page to
colleagues to share information and they respond with, "Wow, you
found all that quickly", followed up by, "Which tool do you use",
and ON has therefore spread its influence that little bit wider.

I know MS understand the viral affect of software, but at the end of
the day if the software is good then the good news travels fast. Well
done to the ON team and I look forward to the next version.

Good to hear your feedback, PJ.

I'm not suspecting - I'm praying (to sort section tabs) :)

PJ, you're not the only one with a ON success story. Bear with me because it
is 3:30 in the morning, and i have a few words to get off my chest. Also
Not only thanks to ON but Chris, and every one else on this newsgroup has
been a great help, and no one really recognizes how much work these guys do
to help unsuspecting users.
One note has helped me too with every day uses. I too saw the free trial,
and had to get my paws on it, and this was one program I couldn't do without.
I had 6 Folders and over 30 notes the first week. Now 10 folders and keeping
a good 78 notes, and growing.
Keeping my School work, all my Client Data, Diary entrys, Theorys, and Just
notes all seperate but in the same notebook has never been more oganized.
I do use a tablet PC, and Inking my notes is fast and easy.

To the dismay of all program there are some brown spots (like bananas), some
inking recognition, pen limitation, I could go on about all the things i've
posted and requested for. Unfortunatly, by the sound of it the
designers/programmers/MVPs or who ever they are! Don't see onenote living on
to see an SP2. But they hope.
I think, to keep Onenote alive, we need to let MS know that there are many
users that actually live by using ON. (I for one could not live without)
I was lucky, I had found ON on Ebay, that someone bought just for the
Rebate, and I bought for cheaper than regular store price. But even at 99$
that's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. But I would've paid
almost anything, after using the trial, and getting my life organized, there
is another notebook program for tablet users, but its just not ON. And I
think has taken the fame from ON. The fame that would've made MS take another
look at ON and push forward on it.

Thats my 2 cents worth.

OneNote will live to see many days, James. It is a highly successful
product, and needs to evolve a bit. It will get there. And to PJ - too bad
you're not on a Tablet PC where OneNote really shines!

There will be an Sp2 for 2003 (at least) and of course a whole new version.
Note sure how you got the idea it "wouldn't live on". Rumours of our demise
seem premature...we're doing very well thank you!

I appreciate the kind words - we love hearign how people succeed with
Onenote.

Cheers,
Chris (MS)
