successor changes dates of predecessors

I am having problems with successor changing the dates of a predecessor.

here is my scenario

task A has a Deadline of 10/15 and is of type "As Late as Possible" and
indeed finishes on 10/15 as it should.
task B cannot be completed before task A
when i created task B the start date was 9/30
when i make task B a successor to task A and set it to "As soon as possible"
what happens is that task A is moved so that it finishes before 9/30
I want task B to start after 10/15 or whatever the finish date is on task A,

how do i accomplish this?
I have another situation in the same project that seems to work fine, but i
cannot see what is different

Are you sure you have B as a successor to A and not the other way around?
The predecessor is the "controlling" task and the successor the "controlled"
task. It does not necessarily mean the successor always occurs after the
predecessor, although that's certainly true most of the time. What is the
link type (FS,SS,FF,SF?) and what direction does the link arrow point?

Hi Steve

it is a FS link
the arrow points from task A to task B
I have sent the file to your email
task A is line 22, task B is line 23
further up you can see i have it working correctly I have added 2 successor
tasks correctly to a different predecessor (lines 16,21)

woops, hit wrong post button and replied out of thread.

I have sent you the file.
there must be some simple answer, I just cannot find it.
the file i sent shows the feature working the way I want , and then a few
lines down I cannot get it to work again.
I'm stuck.
thanks

just wondering, was this problem resolved and if so could you please share
the solution

Hi Julie,

I've looked at that file.
Essentially it was a "From Finish darte" case where one task was ASAP (all
the others the default ALAP)
And in that environment ASAP reacts as a "strong" constraint

Hi Jan

thanks for this ... was just wondering if it was something more esoteric
that i needed to file away in the back of my mind :)

Hi Julie,

just got power back on here in florida.
I took Jans advice and changed the project to schedule from start date
instead of from finish date,
this fixed that problem, and did not affect other tasks.
