sudden document lock in MS office 2003

Has anyone experienced sudden locking of a document? Tech
support is not able to open the document. This locks all
programs. Please help, I lost much needed office
documents and am wondering if 2003 has a "glitch". The
only solution was to uninstall MS Office, and other
connections are lost.
