Sudden Inability to Format Page Numbers and Add-in references?

I work with Word daily, and have never had this problem before. All of my
Word files have suddenly lost their ability to format EndNote references or
basic (Word) page numbers. This suggests something has changed in how Word
is doing its formatting, but I have no idea how to fix this. Any
suggestions??
