sudden persistent crashes-nothing fixes the problem

MacPro, 10.5.8, Word 12.2.4: Out of the blue, today Word started crashing every time I tried to save changes to a document, and without saving a backup. I restarted the computer a couple of times--no good; I ran utilities anddid permission repairs--no good; I installed the 12.2.4 update (I was running 12.2.3), and on new documents, everything is now fine. But if I open a document from earlier today, or any previous document (all .doc), and try to save a change, it completely crashes without saving a back up. I don't recall this ever happening before. Any ideas on this soggy holiday weekend?
