Sudden quitting...for anything

K

Kelly

Hello,

This afternoon Word (for Mac) started quitting every time I tried to
open it, whether I clicked okay or cancel on project gallery, or tried
to open a file from a folder or my desktop. It just won't stay open
longer than a second. I have a Mac 10.2.8, and Word for Mac 10.1.4.
As far as I can tell, it's not connected to a specific template or
file.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!
Kelly

Hi Kelly:

I would suggest an update of Mac OS to 10.3.9, and an update of Word to
10.2.5. You're several updates behind the times :)

If you do the updates, you don't need to do the following, because it will
be done automatically as part of the update process.

Otherwise, see here:

Cheers

The exact same problem Kelly is describing is happening to me. It's
the strangest thing.

Unlike Kelly, I am already using the most current version Office v. X
of Word (10.1.7) and my system software is all up to date (10.4.7).

My problem also started very recently (around the 20th, I believe). I
was able to initially have some luck curing it by removing the Word
preferences, but that no longer has any affect. When the problem first
started, it did not affect Word in other user accounts; now, it won't
work for any user.

The only software I believe I updated prior to the problem starting is
Toast. I completely uninstalled toast and all its components but Word
still won't work (either quits right after start-up or won't finish the
start-up process).

I uninstalled Word and reinstalled it. No luck.

I have verified and repaired disk permissions as well as optimized my
system (disk permissions done both with Disk Utility and OnyX) and that
has not helped either.

I have zapped my PRAM. No change.

No other programs in the MSOffice suite are misbehaving, only Word.

The beginning of my crash log is below -- I'm happy to provide more if
it would be helpful in finding a cure for my MSWord's ills.

Whatever advice, suggestions, voodoo spells can be offered are most
welcome.

Hi David,

Regarding your version of Word, can I assume you mistyped? Because there is
no 10.1.7 and 10.1.x is far from being current anyway.

You say you uninstalled and reinstalled Word. Do you mean Word or all of
Office? If you didn't use the Remove Office tool first and then reinstall
the whole package, then you don't have a clean installation. So I would
recommend that first.

Also, you didn't say if you tried *all* of the other troubleshooting
procedures at the site John pointed you to:
<http://word.mvps.org/mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html>. For instance, did you
check for and test any add-ins (global templates) you might have?

Another possibility is fonts. Try trashing the Office Font Cache and see if
that helps.

Hi Beth & Co.,

In regards to the version of Word, no, there was no typo -- 10.1.7 is
the most current version of Microsoft Office v. X's applications. In
fact, the 10.1.7 update was just released this month.

I had gone through all of the recommendations in the link provided
earlier with two exceptions: global templates/add-ins and duplicate
fonts. I didn't have any global templates/add-ins, so that wasn't the
problem, and I did have some font duplicates but getting rid of them
did not clear up the problem.

So, I took the last resort and did a complete uninstall/reinstall of
the entire MS Office suite. Word seems to be working fine now.
Keeping my fingers crossed that it keeps behaving. If not, I know
that'll be my final sign to just switch over to iWork and be free of
Word's bugginess for good :)

Thanks for the recommendations.

David
