Sudden slow-down in document opening over network

We have a large document (145 pages / 1.9 mB) available on a server for
users to access over a WAN (users can be using anything from W95 (yes,
I know! :)) to XP).

The idea is that they insert hyperlinks into their monthly reports
(held on same server) which refer to the central document. Problem is,
when the hyper-links are clicked, the document takes an age (3-4mins)
to open.

It used to be fine (i.e. for the first month) and the only changes made
are to protect certain areas of the document from unauthorised user
input. Could this be causing a dramatic slow-down or should we be
looking at the network?

Thanks for any help

I had this once where the document had been created on a template. The
template used to create it was deleted, and the access to the document
slowed to a crawl. It would open, it just took ages.

I think by the time it was reported the template had been long gone and
was irrecoverable, so we just copied the data to a new document and it
was thereafter fine.
