Suddenly cannot open any Microsoft Office 2003 applications

I have had Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my desktop PC for 3 years,
using Word, Excel, Publisher, and Outlook. Last night (Tuesday, 2/19/08) all
Office products stopped working. When I attempt to open any of them, a window
opens with the following: "The operating system is not presently configured
to run this application." After closing the message window, another window
opens with the following: "The exception unknown software exception
(0xc06d007e) occurred in the application at location 0x7c812a5b." All of
this occured after about one week of an Office automatic update trying,
unsuccessfully, to install on said PC. I attempted to reinstall Office 2003
from the PC disk, but the .exe will not run. Any help before taking the PC to
a local computer shop would be appreciated.

Hi Paul

By reinstall do you mean you uninstalled it first and then tried to install?
If not, this would be the first thing to try.
