suddenly.doc at end of file names

Just recently I noticed that when I open a folder to look for a file to open
all of the files have.doc at the end of their names. e.g. a file used to say
sailboats, now it shows sailboats.doc

I know they are documents but why do they all now have that extentsion after
them when they never did before? This has happened to all my word documents.
Is there any way I can change them back to just the file name without the
extension?

Thanks in advcance.

You have evidently disabled the Folder Options setting to "Hide file
extensions for known file types."

But it is inadvisable to use that setting because it is global and opens the
way for surreptitious virus infection. If someone sends you a file
harbour.doc, you will see displayed only harbour. If someone sends you a
file called harbour.doc.exe, you will see displayed harbour.doc and will not
see that you are about to run an .exe. So the safest advice is to keep
looking at the extensions.
