Suggested character limit for Word file names? too long=problems.

I've noticed that I cannot make a CD back-up of Word 2003 files if their file
names are too long.
I've also had trouble with not being able to open files with really long
names that other people send me.

Does anyone out there know if there is a suggested character limit for Word
2003 file names?

256 characters.

Try regregistering Word. From Start, Run type in

winword /r

and press enter. Test opening long name documents now. If this doesn't work
and you still cannot burn long file names to a CD, then you may need to run
Windows Setup and choose REPAIR.

Have you deleted any files lately on advice from someone?

Yep. That is so. C: takes 2 of the characters. If it's a long path, then
more characters are subtracted from those available to the name.
