Suites corrupted my files

Did a transfer from my previous computer to new computer which included Word
2000. New computer had a Trial subscription for 2007 Microsoft Suites
including Works Word Processor. Hated the 2007 Works Word Processor so I
deleted it. Now I find out it corrupted all my files on my Word 2000 making
them useless to me unless I buy the 2007 version. I understand files done
under the 2007 version corrupted but think Microsoft pulled a fast on me
auotmatically transferring my old files to the 2007 version without a prior
notification it woud do so by activating the Trial.

Is there a fix for me to convert my old files back to Word 2000. I really
like the 2000 Word and am used to it.

Unless you actively converted your Word files to 2007 docx format, they
remain Word doc format and Word 2000 should be able to open them. Those that
were converted to docx format can be opened with the 2007 compatibility pack

Repair Word/Office 2000 which should fix the registry issues and any missing
application files.

From the ensuing dialog select Word (winword.exe) and check the box to

I'm very confused by your original post, as I do not see how you could have
gotten the Works word processor as part of an Office 2007 trial version.
There is no current version of Works Suite, so you can't have gotten that.
If you got Office 2007, you got Word, not Works.

Dear Suzanne:

My Computer came with "Activation Assistant for the 2007 Microsoft Office
Suites" and part of that package was "Works Word Processor". It was
preinstalled in my Computer. I should not have activated it. My mistake. It
was what it was.

Thanks for the feedback. I can't find any information on any 2007 Microsoft
Office Suite that includes the Works Word Processor, and the KB article at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947542 that discusses the Activation
Assistant does not list Works among the "Applies to" products. Perhaps a
trial version of Works was also included in your OEM package.

I think we are talking about the same thing but I am not sure. Here is what
it said:

Now with that background and no warning it would automatically convert my
2000 Word files to open only using WORKS which I have deleted what does
Microsoft suggest to convert these files back to 2000 Word. THERE WAS NO
WARNING ANY PLACE I WOULD HAVE ALL MY 2000 FILES CONVERTED AUTOMATICALLY SO I
WOULD HAVE TO PURCHASE 2007 MICROSOFT OFFICE SUITE TO OPEN ALL MY OLD FILES?

Your Word files are not "converted" to anything. It sounds like they are
just associated with Works. That doesn't change them.

If you uninstalled Office 2007 and had Works installed (but had not yet
installed Office 2007), then it may well be that the file association
defaulted to Works. Or if may be (and it is more likely) that the files lost
any association and were displayed the generic Windows icon but perhaps
suggesting Works as the program to open with. In any case, as JoAnn says,
this does not mean that the files have been converted in any way, just that
they have lost their association with Word.

You can fix this in any of several ways. Here are two:

1. You can "reregister" Word (reestablish its association with .doc, .dot,
and other Word-format files in the Windows Registry by running the command
winword /r. For details on this, see

2. You can do the same thing manually in Windows Explorer (My Computer).
Right-click on any .doc file. Choose Open With on the shortcut menu. This
may pop open a submenu that includes Microsoft Word, but even if it does,
ignore it and click on Choose Program... Select Word from the list (it may
be at the top under Recommended Programs) and check the box for "Always use
the selected program to open this kind of file." You'll need to repeat this
for .dot and other Word file types (so method 1 is more efficient).
