Summary duration shows 0 hrs

I have the following section on my project schedule. I think the duration on
the summary task, general testing, should show 7.5 hours. It shows 0. There
are several other sections doing the same thing. Yet there are sections that
are working correctly. I can't figure out the pattern. All 4 tasks have the
same resource assigned to it. The tasks are not linked. See details below.

General testing 0 hours 09/23/07 8:00 a.m. 09/23/07 5:00 p.m.

Test setup validations 2 hrs 09/23/07 8:00 AM 09/23/07 10:00 AM
Rebuild user report table 4 hrs 09/23/07 8:00 AM 09/23/07 12:00 PM
Perform database reorg of GEN 3.5 hrs 09/23/07 1:30 PM 09/23/07 5:00 PM
Perform database reorg of HRTEST 3.5 hrs 09/23/07 1:30 PM 09/23/07 5:00

Under the rule of "always check the obvious first" have you tried F9? If
calculation is set to manual you can see this.

Hello JWeaver,

The resource you have assigned has a modified calendar which allows
Sunday (9/23/07) as a working day. The tasks can therefore be schedule
for a Sunday. The duration of those tasks is determined by the
resource's definition of working time.

The summary task "General Testing" does not have any resources assigned,
therefore its working time definition is the project calendar
definition -- I assume a standard Monday through Friday. As Sunday is a
non-working day on the project calendar and the summary task is
scheduled for a non-working day, its duration is zero.

Try creating a task calendar with Sunday marked as working, assign it to
the summary task and you should be all set -- although I see the
duration as 8 hours not 7.5 unless you have changed the calendar to
allow for 1.5 hours break.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I will try this. I don't have permission to create a new base calendar. We
are running MS Office project server 2003. As soon as I get that changed I
will try it. Thanks for the suggestion!
