Summary task bar and indent

P

Pat W.

When indent the summary task bar does not move to reflect the amount of time
with the tasks that have been indented it stays at whatever the original task
time was. Example: The orignal task was 1 day in duration I indent two
tasks under this task and they total five days each. The original task stays
at 1 day duration and does not move to the five days. What am I missing?

Hi Pat W,
Check to make sure your calculation is set to automatic. Choose Tools -->
Options --> Calculation tab.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi

in addition to Julie's reply, i saw this behaviour today in a (very close
to) corrupt project. The main problem with this project was that links
where originally made against the summary tasks ... then the tasks were
rearranged so that subtasks became successors to those summary tasks
creating circular relationships. Every time you opened the project you got
a circular relationship warning and every time you tried to outdent / indent
tasks, the same warning and many of the summary tasks were not displaying
durations correctly.

So if you're having any of these problems as well you might need to have a
look at www.mvps.org/project - under the faqs there is one on uncorrupting a
project file (sorry can't give you the exact link, my internet connection is
not working tonight). Additionally, we had to take off the
predecessors/successors from the summary tasks and then our summary tasks
calculated correctly.

Cheers

FYI - the duration of summary tasks is not necessarily the sum of the
durations of the indented subtasks. It will be from when the earliest
subtask begins until the latest subtask ends. If the subtasks star
together, are not linked and run in parallel for example, the summary task
duration will be simply the duration of the longest subtask, regardless of
how many subtasks there are.
