Summary tasks do not total the Duration values for each subtask. Instead,
Microsoft Project calculates the Duration of a summary task from the Start
date of the earliest subtask to the Finish date of the latest subtask.
Consider these three examples:
1. Task A and Task B each have a Duration of 5 days. Tasks A and B are
linked with a standard Finish to Start dependency, with no lag time or lead
time on the dependency. The Phase I summary task, which has Tasks A and B
as sub tasks, will show a Duration of 10 days.
2. Task A and Task B each have a Duration of 5 days. Tasks A and B are
linked with a standard Start to Start dependency, with no lag time or lead
time on the dependency. The Phase I summary task, which has Tasks A and B
as sub tasks, will show a Duration of 5 days.
3. Task A and Task B each have a Duration of 5 days. Tasks A and B are
linked with a standard Finish to Start dependency, with 5 days of Lag time
on the dependency. The Phase I summary task, which has Tasks A and B as sub
tasks, will show a Duration of 15 days.
Notice that in each example, Microsoft Project did not merely total the
Durations. Hope this helps.

hi, can someone tell me if the total hours in my rolled up summmary tasks
ought to contain all the durations of its sub tasks?that is if, th
susbtasks all add up to 20hrs, shouldn't the summary tasks show 2ohrs
irrespective of tasks dependencies?
