summing fixed costs

I'd like to have my fixed costs summed when I group
subtasks so the total for a group is listed. Currently,
if I have x tasks in a group each with a fixed cost of y,
the total fixed cost for that group of tasks is 0, when I
would like it to be sum (x1y1, x2y2, ...). is that
possible.

I have been told that it is not possible within the fixed
cost column, but can be done by adding another column and
setting it up myself. How is that done?

thanks in advance.

Hello Ben,

You'll insert a custom field such as Cost1 : Insert/ Column...
Right Click on its label : Customize Field / Rename...
- Formula : Field [Fixed Cost]
- Calculation for task summary....Rollup : Sum (or Use Formula)

Hope this helps,

Fixed costs of subtasks actually both sum and don't sum to their
summary. If you have a summary X with subtasks A, B, and C and the
subtasks show a fixed costs of $100 each, you'll find that the Total
Cost field of each subtask has the $100 rolling over into it, adding to
any resource costs associated with the tasks. If you look at the
summary, you'll find that the Fixed Cost field is zero but the Total
Cost field shows $300 so the fixed actually are rolling up where it
counts. The Fixed field remains zero (you'll also notice it's one of
the few fields of the summary that are editable) because you may have a
cost associated with the summary as a whole that is in addition to costs
associated with the subtasks inside it. In a movie shoot, for example,
you may have a studio rental that is associated with the entire shooting
phase as well as costs for props, film, etc, that are associated with
specific individual scene subtasks. Not rolling up in the fixed cost
column makes it possible to properly enter the data for such situations.
