The bottom line is I NEED a better dictionary for Word and OS X!!!
The Office dictionary is not linked to the OS X dictionary is it?

Please, please, please, is there a better dictionary that every
application can access automatically? One that I don't have to call
separately. Surely, I'm not the only one who sees a need for this?

You want a definition dictionary or a spelling one?
For definitions, there are tons of commercial software out there.
For spelling, it's going to be hard to find something that properly
integrates in Word.
For most applications, I use SpellCatcher (doesn't do grammar, but does
a fairly good job for spelling).
