Support for PocketPC?

W

William Fields

Hello,

I'm an avid Notes user on the PocketPC, and love the ability to mix ink and
text in the same document, but am sorely disappointed in the Outlook Notes
user interface I'm forced into using if I want to view/edit those notes on
my desktop.

My dream is to be able to use my desktop as well as my PocketPC to edit my
notes files, can OneNote help me?

I think you'll love OneNote for note taking, and the ability to mix Ink (on a
Tablet PC) and text, and the organization features that OneNote offers.

There is limited support for Pocket PC/Outlook Notes via a one-time, one-way
copy of Outlook Notes from your Pocket PC into a specially created section in
OneNote (You must have OneNote SP1 installed for this feature).

The MS website has a lot of information about OneNote and its features:

Thanks!

I did check out the OneNote site, but haven't found out how I can use the
notes on both my desktop and my PocketPC. When I'm mobile, I like to use my
PPC for notetaking, and when I"m at the office I would like to be able to
view/edit those notes on my desktop system.

I'm looking for something that will allow me to use the same notes on both
the desktop and PPC and synchronize them via ActiveSync.

Some of the OneNote SP1 information isn't clearly linked from the main
OneNote page...

http://www.microsoft.com/office/onenote/prodinfo/sp1/overview.mspx

Again, the PocketPC support isn't full synchronization, just a one-way,
one-time copy. The intention is that you use your PPC on the road to
collect random thoughts and reminders, then automatically copy them to
OneNote SP1, where they can be further sorted and processed.

Sure would be nice if it had two-way synchronization with the PocketPC.

I use my PDA all the time, the only problem I have is that I want my notes
available on my desktop as well as my PDA. There's no reason not to have
full integration.

I have found some solutions, but none of them support inline ink and text.
All other solutions either support text only, or text and ink in separate
areas.

Thanks.

That's a popular request and I'm sure it's being considered, but it's no
small task - especially when you consider the implications of porting Ink to
and from Windows Mobile OS which doesn't support it in quite the same way
the Tablet PC OS does.

Aloha Ben!

I hope they come up with a solution, I don't give MS as much slack in this
regards as some. PocketPC integration should have been a core design
priority when developing the Tablet OS as well as OneNote.

Not all applications are ported to PPCs. It would be nice, but there are
other things which are also "future" items. The original goals were met in
OneNote, with additional items added in the Service Pack 1 - which is a
different approach from the normal.

Understood - but it's a deceptively complicated thing to do and keep in mind
that they took this product from whiteboard to CD in something like 14
months.

Also there may be some question of how much overlap there really is in the
Tablet/PDA market. Now that I have a Tablet PC I find that I use it instead
of my PDA in a lot of instances where before I'd have used the PDA. A
notable example being meetings -- in the past I'd probably take my PDA (or a
yellow legal pad) and take my notes, then go back to my laptop/desktop at
the office and sync/transcribe those notes. Now I take the Tablet and take
the notes directly into it.

I agree that increased PDA integration is a great feature and I'm sure there
will be further progress in that direction. But I'm glad they didn't delay
the product for 6 months so that they could resolve the many issues involved
with PDA sync.

Do have to give them credit for that.

You're right, I don't see much overlap either. There's either Desktop/TPC or
Desktop/PPC. What doesn't sit well with me is that it feels like MS has put
all its' resources into development towards the TPC platform, while everyone
that's bought into the PPC platform is left out in the cold. It would have
been nice to bring the PDA crowd along for the ride (and improve the syncing
along the way!). A set of apps (Desktop/TPB/PPC) that support universal
in-line ink/graphics and text would have benefited everyone.

Thanks for the opportunity to discuss it.

The good news is that I think there is an acknowledgement within MS that
more integration (or at least more powerful, 2-way, synchronization) is
valueable and I think there are efforts to make it a reality. I expect, but
this is just my educated opinion, that the next version of OneNote will
build upon the PPC synchronization features that SP1 added. I'm not sure to
what extent, but I think there will be continued improvement in that area
because there has been a lot of interest (such as your own) in it.

Can you take scribbles in PhatNotes or just text?
I don't have a Tablet PC but I'm searching for a program that will allow me
to take notes on my PalmPC and then synch them with my Desktop PC. Will
OneNote work for this? Or do I need to have a Tablet PC?

If you're using a PocketPC (not a Palm) you can take notes and
OneNote/ActiveSync will copy those notes to OneNote if you want. It
doesn't go the other way, yet, however.
