Suppress Endnotes Will Not Uncheck

Does anyone have any idea why I cannot uncheck "suppress
endnotes" from the Page Setup : Layout tab? The box is
greyed out. I imported the body of my Master's thesis.
Now I cannot get the endnotes to display. Thanks for your
help.
