Word provides no setting or preference for doing so. If you'll share a bit
of detail about your need to do so as well as describe the structure of your
document (for example, any Section Breaks?) there may be a workaround.

Set the Header style Font format to "Hidden".

But I am completely confused why you would want to :)

The purpose of a running header is to print: that's its only use. If you do
not want the document to have a printed header, don't create them :)

Yeah...

Set the Header style Font format to "Hidden".

That's why I asked the intent :) If you do that you have to have the ¶
displayed in order to see the H/F on screen. When you print with them Hidden
the body content behaves as though the H/F didn't exist, right? So you have
to also accommodate that with your margin settings & other formatting
considerations. Otherwise you wind up with pagination issues :)

hello all. Thanks for your replies. I have a single page document. Our letterheads. our logo etc is in the background. Sometimes i want o print off a letter on to the pre-printed letterheads, sometimes I just want to send it as a pdf. so it would be useful to be able to turn the background image on/off.

By chance when you print, did you try looking in Word Options (on the
print menu and elsewhere) the "Include with Document" and uncheck
"Drawing Objects". Not sure logo is a "drawing object", but it might
be. Worth a shot.

To make this simple and prevent disasters from other users, I would make two
"Letter" templates, one clearly marked "For Letterhead" the other marked
"For Email".

Asking users to remember to adjust styles is perilous: they will forget, and
the result will embarrass the company.

Cheers
