switching between slideshow & program causes white border to appea

in slideshow mode, I click to launch an outside program. but when I return
to powerpoint, a white border (at top and right) appears around the slide.

has anyone encountered this problem before? I've tried resolving it by
switching my desktop color (to black as well as making the background color
of the slide itself black, neither works.

any help would be appreciated!

I am using a PP 2004 on a Mac.
