Switching from regular Exchange communication to IMAP

OK...
I've been really frustrated over a weird problem with my Entourage clients connecting to the Exchange server:
Error:
A message in your Outbox could not be sent using account "johnny - Exchange Account".
The server did not recognize the recipients or the server refuses to allow you to send mail.

Explanation:
5.7.1 Unable to relay for (e-mail address removed)

Error 5550
I've tried everything from listing the full user ID ([email protected]), changing the server setting from it's NetBIOS name to IP address, enabling and disabling SMTP authentication, etc...

Now I'm thinking about a different tack: Why not bypass the default Entourage-Exchange protocol and configure as IMAPv4? Therefore, please detail any instructions for connecting to the exchange server via IMAPv4.
