The answer is always depends. Being a long time user of Symantec products I
can only say this... if your corporation is using Microsoft Exchange and you
have an antivirus solution that runs on the Exchange server that integrates
well, then you don't need the e-mail scanning portion on the desktop. I
would even go as far as recommending that you exclude real-time antivirus
scanning of PST, OST, and OAB files to get the best performance.
Now if your world centers around some other type of e-mail system, then you
have to weigh risk vs. usability. For example, I logon with just plain jane
"user" rights so I am comfortable forgoing the e-mail scan engine. If I was
a local administrator, then my opinion would be different.

PS - If your OS choice is Windows 7/2008R2, then you need SEP 11 Maintenance
Release 5.
I'm rolling out Symantec Endpoint Protection, and it has an "email
protection" option. Should I install that? I read here a lot about email
scanners screwing things up. Are Symantec and Microsoft on the same page
with this yet? We have outlook 2003 and 2007 clients.
