Symantec Winfax Starter

Windows ME, Office 2000
Still almost instantly getting error when trying to send
faxes. "Unable to connect to the server:Account: 'Symantec
Fax Starter Edition', SMTP Server: '127.0.0.1', Error
Number: 0x800ccc0e'). Don't get as far as dial tone from
modem picking up. Do get an audible dial tone when I
select a manual receive. Configurator says setup works
fine (EVERY TIME). ESS voice/data/fax (class1/class2)
modem works fine for everything else. I'm now using a
cable modem for internet but modem will still dialup
and "talk" to ISP.
I'm convinced it's a software setup problem but have tried
many times and spent days trying to find it to no avail.
Intermittently had it working several months ago but
consistently get above message now even after repeatedly
following complete removal & re-installation
instructions. Slipstick site was no help. Have found
reference to this error message many times but nothing
I've done fixes it. Any other (reasonable) suggestions?

This program was completely abandoned before Windows ME was ever released
and is no longer supported. I have no documentation that it even works on
ME. I certainly never tested it because I couldn't even get Windows ME to
run.

I know Winfax Starter does/did work. I also know it was a
pain from the start but it's one of those things I
want/need once in a long while. I can do without it if
need be but nice to have on occasion. I like a challenge
but there is a limit.
Because it seems to partially work (ie. will pick up to
receive on request) I still think there's a simple fix for
the send function but I have no idea how to go about it.

Tried uninstalling Starter Edition and installing MS Fax
according to instructions from Kanyak(?). I know MS Fax
isn't supported with Win ME. The instructions were
supposed to get around the installation problems.
Couldn't get it to work right either (probably something I
did wrong) so tried Winfax Starter again. It was a fairly
lengthy process with no successes. Frustrating. Maybe I
should either stick with the old fax machine or buy a
program. Neither of those is a solution that sits well,
though.
Thanks, anyway, for the responses.

There might be a fix, but I'm not sure how simple it would be. I just never
had a chance to do any troubleshooting with it on ME so the only information
I have is what's on:
http://www.slipstick.com/addins/services/winfaxse.htm

Trying various modem drivers and rerunning the fax configuration wizard is
the only thing I can think of that might help.
