Symbol font: short cut for inserting one character?

John Altman

In an older version of Mac Word, I could insert one and only one symbol font
character by typing something like Ctrl-shift-Q, but this doesn't appear to
work in Mac Word X or 2004. Is there a way to do this? I work in a field
where the nomenclature is littered with names that have alphas, betas, and
gammas attached to just about everything, and it would be nice if I could do
this without too much mousing around.

Thanks,

John

I believe that under Tools->Customize->Customize Keyboard
assigning InsertSymbol to the key combo of your choice should do what
you want.

Do not use the Symbol font for these. Most fonts have alpha, beta, and
gamma characters on Mac OS X, and you can access them just fine if you
stick with Office 2004. Simply stay in the font you're already in, and
enter the character directly (using the Character Palette, for example,
or switch keyboard layouts). There are other ways to create shortcuts
for frequently used characters, such as hex entry and autotext; a
chapter of "Take Control of What's New in Word 2004" [second volume]
describes these in detail. m.

You can also do it easily from Insert:Symbol…
Simply select the symbol you want there and assign it a new shortcut.
THe nice thing is that it automatically uses the Unicode representation
of the symbol instead of using the Symbol font :))
