Symbol for updown line

This is word, but could also serve me in other apps.
How do you type in the symbol which is the vertical up and down divider
line? Thanks!

What you're looking for (I believe) is called the "pipe" character - also
referred to as a "bar" - ( | ) It's the upper register character on the
backslash key (Shift+Backslash) even though the key cap marking typically
appears as a broken line.
