Symbol That Replaces Cursor

Hi,

What is the symbol that occasionally replaces the curson and looks like the
"switch between header and footer" symbol, in View>Header and Footer, but
has the smaller rectangle at the bottom and at the right side? Also, What
is it's function? It will show up both in normal, Header and Footer, and in
page layout view.

Sounded to me like the contextual menu icon that you get if you hold down
control or when you right-click, if it appears also in programs other than
Word.
