symbols showing up after words in email

I must have hit a control key in outlook because now after every sentence
there are symbols that I didn't type in. When the message is sent the
symbols don't appear on the message recieved by the person I am sending to.
How do I turn this off?

If you're using Word as your email editor you might have the option on to
see special characters. Start a blank email, go to the Tools menu > Options
command > View menu
