Version: 2008 I am looking for the Long and Short vowel symbols in Word 2008. They are separate, but I need them over the vowels. Is that possible?

Try switching to the US Extended Keyboard layout. Then you should be able to make macrons via Alt + a, then the vowel. Try Alt +b, then the vowel for short.

How do I switch to the US Extended Keyboard layout?

Wording may vary depending on your flavor of OS X, but in Snow Leopard:

Apple Menu> System Preferences> Language & Text> Input Sources

Check the box for U.S. Extended.
