Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: Exchange

Every once in a while, my entire system grinds almost to a halt while Microsoft Sync Services hogs up to 90% of the CPU. Another post on this topic has been started in february and is no more active. Thuss the problem is not solved. Regularly the fans of my MBP starts loudly and when I Check why, I observe that Microsoft Sync Service use 90% of the processor.

Isn't there a solution? It as been a very long while now sinc this problem has been identified.

Make sure both MacOS X and Office are perfectly up to date 910.5.5 and
12.1.4 respectively)

Hello,

Both are perfectly up to date. 10.5.5 and 12.1.4, the problem remains

Then rebuild your database and make sure SyncServices are (re-)enabled.
You might have a corruption that blocks the whole process,

I did several rebuild already without any improvement. When I make a control of the base with "Microsoft database utility", the result is always positive. So I don't thnik I have any corruption.

Then I don;t know what would be messing up with the Sync Services. It
has to be some data that refuses to sync (whethter it is detected as a
corruption or not).
Do you have lots of data to sync??

Microsoft Sync Services hogs up to 90% of the CPU.

Found this fix posted by another user:

<quote>
What fixed it was disabling syncing everywhere, .mac and Entourage ...
Then tossing the SyncServices folder in ~/library/applicationsupport

Rebooting, emptying the trash and renabling syncing. First with .mac then
with Entourage...

Apparently something became corrupt in one of the backing store files and
was causing much pain.
</quote>

Let me know if this works for you.

Hello,

I try to delete the whole SyncServices folder this morning. First, the problem remains. Secondly, Now I have a regular message telling me that "Sync services detected a problem and must be closed" with the option to send the report to Microsoft. This occured 4 times in two hours...

I REALLY wouldn't do that.
There are ways to reset SyncServices, but this sure is not one of them.
You could try using Syncrospector (part of the Developper tools, free
with a free ADC account), or you can use a more manual (but *dangerous*)
approach

Quit any app using SyncServices (Entourage, Address Book, iSync, Safari,
iCal, Yojimbo......)

Then in the terminal, use:
killall SyncServer
(to turn the SyncServer off first)

then and only then you can trash
~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/

Well... another try... I stopped all services properly as recommanded by Corentin. Then I rebuilded the database (process which always takes hours), then I flushed the content of /application support/syncservices, I rebooted, restared the sync services. The result is the same.... no progress...

Create a new User in System Preferences. Open Entourage and create a new
account for Exchange. Test. Does the problem still exist?

Steps to help determine where the problem is located.

1) you can eliminate your Identity by creating a new Identity in Entourage
and see if you experience the same problem.

2) if a new Identity still exhibits the same issues, then create a new User
in System Preferences and test Entourage there.

3) If the problems still exist in the new User, it's a problem with your
base OS files. If running the Apple combo does not fix, then you might need
to do an "Archive & Install".

I'm not sure if this relates to your problem but its not unusual for
sync services, when operating, to put a full load on the CPU's. This
only temporary though. Once done, the CPU's settle right back down.
Additionally, if you were to sync a handheld this would occur. if you
sync you handheld say two or three times, in my case the fans will
kick in as the computer becomes fairly hot. Again, once done though,
it all settles down. There is a monitor called istat nano or pro that
shows you system activity. If you don't use Entourage but just the
Apple apps you'll only get this system load when you sync your
handhelds. its nothing to worry about.

Hello,

I did several manifuplations and now the sync services is quite. I don't know which one solved the problem.

1. Stop all sync services
2. Flush the content of ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/
3. Rebuild the database (this is incredibly long)
4. Repair the rights with disk utility

I hope it will stay like this for a while

Hello,

Yesterday I made a post saying that one of the manipulation solved the problem.

This morning, I discovered a crash message telling me that Sync services crashed. I send the report to Microsoft.

The problem is back again . Sync services is at 100% CPU permanently.

It is so annoying. This software is really a joke, I don't understand how a software which is so buggy can be put on the market.

JR I'm with you on this one - Ummm! What is being described anyway I
don't think is a problem. I won't happen if you just use the Apple
apps but occurs when you engage Entourage or sync a handheld with
Missing Sync. Its normal and all settles down after a sync.

I'm not sure about this forum honestly. People really don't seem to be
getting answers here that have already been answered. I really think
that anyone should also be using Macfixit and possibly even pay for
the Pro version. I've found great answers to vexxing problems that
Apple tech support, Microsoft Tech support doesn't know. The use of
the Apple forums has proved excellent for strictly Apple problems and
its only after having exhaused one of these two forums will I call
tech support. Microsoft tech support forum (Mactopia) is probably the
worse of anything I have ever used. Use Markspace forums for handheld
sync support, Brighthand forums for handheld support overall etc. This
forum makes good reading but its not overly helpful.

First you have to be aware that this forum (frontend to the usenet
groups) is simply a peer support group. MS doesn't post here.

Then, even though people here do their best to find solutions to the
common issues, a lot of issues (SyncServices for instance) remain out of
our reach. It could be a bug in the System or in Entourage, but in any
case, there is no easy fix to all the problems raised here,
