Sync to Actuals causes MS Project to crash

Have a project that keeps indicating it is out of sync with actuals. When we
try and sync project crashes.

Have found 3 tasks assigned to generic resources that have Actual Protected
Work.
I'm thinking that this is what is causing the problem. A generic resource
can't
have Actual Protected Work, can it?

I was afraid to say this but, unfortunately we are not at SP2a or SP2. Still
running SP1. Trying to stablize things before we go to SP2a.

This would be *the* road to stabilization. Getting the software bugs out of
your way is always a step in the right direction.
