Synching a project server group with Active Directory

T

Tess

When I go into Server Settings - AD Resource Pool Synchronizing, it shows
that "the synchronization failed. To identify where the errors occurred, see
the Windows event log on the server."

The error log is below:

This all started when I wanted a user to be part of the Enterprise Resource
Pool. I put this user in the appropriate AD group that's supposed to be
synchronized with Project Server.

Please help.

Has this worked previously?

Do security groups sync with AD successfully?

If you remove the new user from the AD group, does the sync work?

Look for checked out resources.

Have you added any required custom fields for resources? If so, remove the
required flag.

You can elevate ULS logging for the AD Sync to verbose in central admin to
obtain additional details about this error.

Tess

Yes, this has worked previously.
Yes, the security groups sync with AD successfully (Server Settings - Manage
Groups - Shows "succeeded" for the groups
Removed the new user then tried to sync again. Unfortunately, I got more
errors in the Windows Event Log:

I looked at the checked out resources and the only resources that are
checked out are Enterprise Projects. Do those need to be checked back in
(force check-in) in order to sync with AD?

There are NO required fields for resources.

How do I "elevate ULS logging for the AD sync to verbose...to obtain
additional details about this error?

P

Paul Conroy

Raise logging to verbose in Central Admin, Operatios, Diagnostic logging.
From the drop down, select Project Server AD Sync and set the logging to
verbose. Take note of the location of the logs from the same page. Initiate
AD sync manually, then check the log file for errors.

Projects do not need to be checked in for AD sync to be successful.

Have you installed SP1 and the Infrastructure Update ?

T

Tess

We have NOT installed SP1. We have it scheduled sometime next month.
Will SP1 resolve this issue?

What is the "Infrastructure Update?

P

Paul Conroy

I couldn't say for certain without going through the list of fixes, however I
did see similar issues with RTM code which I've not seen since SP1.

I would also strongly recommend that you apply the infrastructure update at
the same time as SP1.

T

Tess

When you say "infrastructure update", do you mean upgrading the Project
Professional 2007 to SP1, upgrading Wndows SharePoint Services to SP1, and
upgrading MS Office SharePoint Server?

T

Tess

Thanks for all your help.

I will keep this handy when we do the upgrade.

We've applied SP1 for Project Server 2007 along with the
Infrastructure Update. We've also set up to schedule synchronization
of the Enterprise Resource Pool with AD to happen at 11:00 PM every
night. After applying SP1 and the Infrastructure Update, we're still
encountering the error above. However, when I log on to PWA and
initiate the synchronization manually, it works. So I'm thinking
something is wrong with the account that's being used for
synchronization. Is this wrong?

I don't know a whole lot about Project Server 2007. I don't know if
the account (in this case, SSP2) has enough rights to do this or if
the password was input incorrectly. I don't know where to look.
