Synchronize Visio Document Stencil

Tony

I'm using Visio 2003 Pro. As you probably know, when a shape is removed from
the drawing it still remains in the document stencil. The document stencil
seems to contain all shapes that were ever added to the document.

I would like to see a command in Visio to "synchronize" the document stencil
with the current shapes in use inthe document. This command would force the
document stencil to contain only those shapes that are currently being used
in the drawing.

This would be very handy as I'm developing custom stencils. As it is now, I
have to go through trhe document stencil and make sure every shape listed is
actually being used.

Hi Tony,

you can use the add-on 'Clean It' (created by Chris Hopkins).
This add-on will remove all Masters from the document stencil if they are
not referenced by any shape in the drawing.
Download from http://visiocafe.com.

Good luck

I am wondering what is the harm in simply deleting all of the masters on
the document stencil. It will reduce the file size.

It takes away the ability to make a change like color, etc. in the
document stencil without editing each instance individually on the
drawing. I am not sure I will be using things like this much. I read
"About the document stencil" on Visio help and I am not sure I will be
using the document stencil for the purposes stated.

Deleting masters that are in use in the document may increase your file size
rather than decrease it.

A master stores all the information about a shape. When you use that shape
in your drawing, Visio only has to remember its position and any
customizations you make. All the other information is inferred from the
master. Deleting the master forces Visio to store all shape information
locally in every shape on the page. This means you have lots of copies of
the same information floating around and is terribly inefficient.
