Synchronize with Project Server Error

R

Rich

Hi all

Kind of new to this so please bear with me.

I have set up the following:

Windows Server 2003 Standard (SP1)
Windows SharePoint Services
SQL 2000 Standard (SP 3a)
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (SP2)
Project Server 2003 (SP1)

When I have created a new site using the Project Template everything goes ok
except when I am in the site and I click "Synchronize with Project Server"
under the Actions pane I get the following error:

"The server running Windows SharePoint Services failed to connect to
Project Server. Your changes will not be saved into the Project Server
database. Please try again layer or contact your administrator."

I have created an account on Project Server for me using my corporate logon
ID. I can log in to Project Server using the same account.

Any ideas why this is happening? I have followed the various MS
documentation and have searched newsgroups and the Internet but cannot find
anything to guide me in the right direction.

I'm sure I haven't left enough info here so please let me know if I need to
provide more.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rich

You mention that you create a site... is the site created with a project or
created from inside Windows Sharepoint Services?

Hi Chris

Thanks for replying.

I have created the site by going to Portal Server 2003 ---> Sites --->
Create Site

Thanks again

Hi

Unfortunately the sites created in Sharepoint Portal Server will not offer
the synch with Project capability ... the Windows Sharepoint Services that
Portal is built on is not compatible with Project Server

If you run the Project Server configuration wizard against this site ... you
will crash your Sharepoint Portal Server

You need to create a new virtual server (web site) and extend it with
Sharepoint Central Admin

If you would like any information on this let me know ....

But there is absolutely no way to synch Portal created sites with Project
Server :(

Hi Chris

Thanks for that.

How do I create a site from within Project Itself? Sorry to be a pain with
all these questions.

Also when I view the Virtual Server List through Windows SharePoint Services
admin. I see there are two listed - one is Defauilt Web Site (version
6.0.2.6568) and the other (which I manually created on port 81) is Project
Server (Not installed). Would you say this is correct?

Thanks again for all your help, I really appreciate it.

Rich:

First of all, I do not recommend installing Portal Server on the same
machine with Project Server. Each should have their own dedicated host in
most circumstances. If you must have this arrangement, then you must read
the following KB:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;840701

I suggest that you create a new virtual server and extend it with Windows
SharePoint Services to connect to Project Server and steer clear of the
virtual server running Portal Services.
