Syncronization of files

When you make directories and files "available offline"
which syncronizes a network drive with say a laptop, does
the files that are sycronized become orphaned when then
corresponding network mappings are disconnected? Does
Office automatically delete these syncronized files when
you uncheck the "Make available offline" selection? If so
how do I find these files and delete them?
