System dangerously low on resources

Fernando

Hi: Yesterday, after trying to open an attachment with a
Word file (Word 2000), my PC froze, and then I got an
error message "The system is dangerously low in
resources". Since then, all my computer files are working
OK except Word. Everytime I try opening the Word or any
Word files, my PC freezes, I get the error message, and
I'm forced to restart (Ctrl>Alt>Del only). I reinstalled
Word, ran Dr. Watson, looked everywhere for the solution
to no avail. Virus? Anyway I can solve this problem?
Thanks in advance.

"Resources" in the Microsoft environment can mean more
than RAM and disk space. It can also mean registry size
and condition.

I ran into this on two separate software installation
projects recently, the most notable being Enterprise
version of Norton Antivirus.

I picked up a notation from MS's knowledgebase, and after
doing the following work on each machine (there were
hundreds with the problem), I found it worked almost 100%
of the time.

Clean up the registry by removing all unused or poorly
installed or fractured software - uninstall, and then
check that they are removed from directories, settings,
and registry itself.

Remove all unused profiles and then empty the recycle bins
for them (you need to login as administrator to get access
to them all).

Check the registry size parameters and reset them.

Rebuild swapfile by changing the settings.

Clear all junk from Temp directories, and remove all
~*.* and *.tmp and drwtsn*.dmp files.

Set up defrag, and reboot.

This will sufficiently clean up the registry to hopefully
eliminate the error.

For further info, check the Knowledgebase at MS and search
for "resources".
