System.mdv

I created a Access 2000 mdb that I sent to a client in mde form.
the Client is running XP with AC2000.
they try to open my MDE and get
"couldn't find file "System.mdv". This file is required for startup.

I searched my complete drive for this file and can not find it.
is there some default on Access that my client needs to change before
loading my mde?
is there some default I need to change in the MDB ?

Ok.. on my computer the mde runs fine. ON my computer there is no
System.mdw.
on my clients it ask for System.mdw.
I am trying to figure out why on my computer the System.mdw is not needed
and on my clients it is needed.

When running Access *some* mdw file is always required. You must have your default
set to something besides "System.mdw" in which case you don't need a file named
"System.mdw" on your PC. His default is still set to use "System.mdw" (that is the
setting when you install Office), but cannot find it.

If your app has security applied, then he needs a copy of the MDW file you used to
create it. If not then he needs *any* mdw file which either you or he can create.
Obviously in the latter case the simplest thing would be to create a new mdw named
"System.mdw" and place it in his Office folder and then have him join it using the
Workgroup Administrator utility. Actually, since it is already looking for
System.mdw, then it should not be necessary for him to join it. He just needs a file
with that name at the location that Access is looking for it.

thanks for the help
I tried to run WrkgAdm.exe from the run box.
says can't find.
I have not assigned any security to this since it is a single user Access
project.

thanks for your help.
I found the MDW file.
I am curious why the user does not have one on their computer.
I have ask if they open Access before. I have ask them to create a blank db
as a test.
I also have ask them to do the same thing look for a *.mdw file on their
computer thru windows explorer.

It is a bit of a mystery if they truly do not have a System.mdw file on their
system, but there is another situation which raises that same error.

On a PC that has Access 2000 and then afterwards an Access 97 Runtime app is
installed. Whichever program is last run will reset all Windows file
associations. This means that after running the 97 Runtime app, double-clicking
an MDB file will cause Windows to attempt to open that file with the 97
executable. If Access 2000 is opened, then the file associations change back.
This behavior is fairly well known.

Well another thing the 97 Runtime app can do is change the registry setting that
indicates where the System.mdw file is located. So after the 97 Runtime app is
run and then subsequently the user tries to use A2K, it will report that it
can't find the System.mdw file.

More likely, the .mdw file is on their computer but somehow it is in the
wrong location or the registry entry for it is wrong.

They probably haven't used Access before.

I got a reply back, from the client.
apparently the instruction I gave , based on the input from the this group,
solved the problem
Thanks Again.
