'SYSTEM.MDW required at startup' message

I converted a database from 97 to 2000 and the user got a message 'SYSTEM.MDW
is required at startup'. Does anyone know what could have caused this? There
is no SYSTEM.MDW anywhere in the folder. The user had run the 97 version and
then the 2000 version. There may be some old 2.0 code in the database as it
was originally in 2.0.

Every session of Access uses a workgroup file. Out of the box, it uses
system.mdw. In 97 that was installed to the windows system folder. 2000 may
not be looking in the right place. Do a search for wrkgadm.exe on the
computer (there should be two of them). Run each and ensure you are joined
to system.mdw.

On my system, I found one in C:\Windows\system32
However, I have a different operating system (XP) and Office version (2003)
to my user who has Win 2000 and Office 2000.
How do I tell Access where to look for this file?

On the user's machine Start, Run, wrkgadm.exe - that's for Office 2000 and
prior.

On your machine (Office 2003), you'd run the workgroup administrator from
within Access - Tools, Security, Workgroup Administrator

Once you run the workgroup administrator, you'll see the button to 'Join' a
different workgroup.
